This is no longer the trial of the men of the “thigh of ndrangheta,” it is the trial of Giancarlo Pittelli; on the contrary, it is not even a trial anymore, it is a summary sentence of condemnation. This was decided by RAI with the broadcast, on Monday evening, of an episode of Direct TV in a Soviet style. Perhaps it is because a court has not yet been found whose judges are not incompatible to judge the defendants of the Maxitrial of Nicola Gratteri. Perhaps it is because no one is Einstein and is capable of distinguishing the position of the 416 defendants who appear every day starting January 16 in the maxi-structure of Lamezia where the “Scott Rebirth” process is celebrated. Or is it for an unfathomable reason, one of those of the anti-mafia professionals who continue to remain in a past of massacres and devastations that (thankfully) no longer exist, but without which many people risk remaining unemployed.

It may be for all these combined reasons that RAI, this public service that all Italians pay for in their electricity bill, decided to cut the head off the bull and cancel the process. So, what’s the point? The sentence is soon pronounced: all guilty. Despite what the Minister of Justice, Marta Cartabia, solemnly declared two days ago regarding the constitutional principle of the presumption of innocence.

There is always a journalist for this purpose, Riccardo Iacona. There is already a director, Riccardo Iacona, as well as a conductor and a lighting technician. Always him, Riccardo Iacona. The first image is evocative, a riot of cobalt lights and the narrative voice that immediately puts your hands around your throat: Vibo Valentia and its province light up in blue, with three thousand police officers and SIG men besieging 334 arrested and 416 suspected. The mafias of these places have been dismantled with their 160,000 inhabitants and 50 municipalities. These are the Bad Guys. Accompanied by the deafening music of a funeral march in a horror film. But thankfully, there is the Good. Here is the first image of satisfaction from prosecutor Gratteri (in the film, he will appear six times in total) during the press conference on December 19, 2019, after the raid of 334 people. Nothing is said about what happened in the following days, the dismissals, the cancellations ordered by judges of different levels, intervened with surgical precision on the real trawling carried out by the police led by the chief prosecutor. The music becomes more dramatic while the official eye of the police aboard the helicopter shows the territories now occupied by the mafia that “have inserted themselves into every neighborhood of the city.” Impressive, just like the arrest in transit of the ‘Ndrangheta boss, Luigi Mancuso, after two years of harassment. The second image of Gratteri during a press conference confirms this.

But it is immediately clear that, although he is indeed a very important mafia leader in these regions of Calabria, he is not the true protagonist of the film shot by RAI. The real subject who is close to the authors of the horror film is thrown in: Mancuso knew precisely the day and hour he was arrested, to the point that he had to play ahead. Who gave him the news? Before the credits, the author appears on video, alarming us about the existence of “unfaithful men in public administration,” throwing in the name of lawyer Giancarlo Pittelli, reassuring us that hundreds of men worked on the investigation. Third image of Gratteri during a press conference. Pithy phrase: this is not a criminal record, it is democracy. End of the preview.

December 19, 2019“Scott Rebirth” begins as “the largest anti-mafia operation after that of Palermo.” But after a while, the figures should cause blushes on the cheeks of those who led the operation. Of the 334 arrest warrants, 203 were canceled: 51 by the GIP, 123 by the Liberty Court, 13 by the Supreme Court without postponement, and 9 with postponement. A defeat. This was over a year ago. But the clock of RAI stopped on that December 19, in fact, it only talks about the 334 who ended up in prison, omitting the fact that two-thirds of them were quickly withdrawn. It is mentioned that the prosecutor of Catanzaro allows a lightning campaign every two months. No mention of the many flops that came from the first trials of these operations, up to “Nemea”, with eight acquitted out of 15 and a conviction that, in fact, already anticipates a conviction against some characters from Mancuso’s thaw. The reason why, if there are attentive and rigorous judges at the Court of Appeal of Catanzaro, the debate on “Scott Rebirth” should be interrupted to change two of the three judges of the court, because, as they admit themselves, incompatible due to prior judgment: they are the same magistrates from “Nemea.”

The whole reconstruction leads to point the camera at a Nicola Gratteri in a sweater in his office (fourth appearance), who does not talk much about the mafia or murders or white wolves. Yet, over the years, Calabria, like Sicily, has not missed anything. He reports to the interviewer and author how gifted he has been at clearing the prosecutor’s offices of curious and suspicious people, including even a person who was neither Calabrian nor even married. I wonder what he was doing in those hallways. This is not a moment of peace, but of war, claims the prosecutor. The mind immediately turns to the bunker room trial, which Dr. Gratteri is doing these days in the role of the prosecution. The process that RAI considers unnecessary is now becoming a field of “war.” Furthermore, images of the prosecutor’s office alternate with those of the same journalist in another office filled with bookshelves and woodwork with dozens of boxes: these are the prosecutors, sheets, and papers made at the public prosecutor’s office. Not even the effort to consult the GIP order. The story of the ‘Ndrangheta or the answer to the obsessive question: how did the Mancuso become the kings of the region? Did they do everything themselves?

Lawyer Giancarlo PittelliSardinia, judges refuse to hear his version of events, too long for the robes of the journey from Catanzaro. He is accused of everything and nothing: first of mafia association, then of external competition, but above all of disclosing official acts. What may seem little, but would not be the case if he had really provided his assistant Luigi Mancuso Giancarlo Pittelli should be, in his intention, the big fish of the trawling. His arrest, however, is not accidental; the lawyer had been in their sights for at least three years. The treatment he is subjected to is immediately particular, stressful, humiliating: hours of waiting, moving into a complete report from the repentant who accuses him. Pittelli denies that this happened and there is no evidence. Rather, there is the perverse suspicion that revolves around any lawyer who defends defendants for mafia crimes. Not only do you identify the person responsible for the crime, but you also extend the suspicions to the lawyer.

To give an idea of the treatment he suffers, even on a journalistic level, the former parliamentarian, when a note sheet is seized on his table, even in the transmission of RAI, the manuscript is called “pizzino,” even Pittelli was not Totò Riina. There is a play on the fact that in Parliament, the lawyer, like all his colleagues, but also the magistrates do, worked within the justice committee (jurists rarely address agricultural or social policies) and to ask the minister about criminal law. Images of the class of Montecitorio are shown, as if it were the extension of an ambiguous situation, and they alternate with images taken in the street, while being legal and assisted to enter the law firm.

He even goes so far as to say that it was not possible to capture the conversation between the two (which would also be prohibited, or in any case not a usable procedure), but that you can still imagine it. You therefore have the right to cite the fruit of the imagination of certain carabinieri. After the fifth appearance of prosecutor Gratteri, the floor is finally given a few minutes to the two defense lawyers of Giancarlo Pittelli, Salvatore Staiano and Disputable Drive. Who tries to explain that the crime is not there, and they try in vain to understand what the accusation (and also Iacona and even RAI) means by the “availability” of Pittelli towards the thighs of Mancuso. Did you recommend to your daughter to go to university, do you care to know why a sick child was operated on? And where is the evidence of the stolen report from the repentant?

RAI may be right, it is useless to hold the trial if these are the “evidences.” Or perhaps the handcuffs and everything that followed were unnecessary? Meanwhile, the unconscious Riccardo Iacona, after sending us the sixth appearance of Gratteri, wishes the prosecutor “good work” and sends him “a strong hug.” Everyone has their favorite friends.
